Beverage tax foes hold sway financially in Maine
By The Associated Press

The group leading the beverage tax repeal effort has raised more than $2 million, records indicate, while defenders of the pending law have raised less than $200,000.

Fed Up With Taxes, a political action committee backed by beverage companies, Maine businesses and the Maine State Chamber of Commerce, raised money from bottlers of national soda brands and other beverage industry sources.

For the group called Health Coverage for Maine, $40,000 came from the American Medical Association.

If you raise the cost of goods sold; this time on spirits and other beverages, this time it will be taxes that affect the cost, it does not take a Philadelphia lawyer to figure out that sales could and most likely will drop off a little. With the holiday season upcoming, there may be a little reprieve, however, in the far fun, sales could show a significant decline. Who is organizing these tax efforts, anyway? With so much discord and financial, economic and hardship woes Maine people are facing right now (not to mention the rest of the country), any new taxation simply hurts the people more! This is a stupid bill anyway, and comes at an even more ridiculous time!

Here we go again, the big outfits that we just bailed out want to get rid of anything that might cost them a penny. Face it, people, Dirigo is going to get paid for, one way or the other. With tax dollars. All depends on whose tax dollars will go for it. Vote NO on Question !

In the past I would have voted no on both, but the Baldacci way has trashed Maine, so I’m voting Yes to Both!

Anyway you look at it were in a big pile of hurt and the Baldacci way isn’t cutting it!

.

Don't fall for all of the rhetoric from the pro-tax crowd, as they won't stop until we're all taxed to death. Vote YES on #1 to reject this "midnight tax," and to let our leaders from both sides of the political aisle know enough is enough. It's time for Maine to cut spending and get away from the old status quo mentality.

If you would like to see some examples of how our so-called state leaders have been wasting our tax dollars on Governor Baldacci's pet project, a.k.a. Dirigo Health, we have a great new watchdog resource at http://www.maineopengov.org. However, make sure you are sitting down as some of the numbers will probably shock you.

If you'd like to help make a difference in Maine, the Maine Taxpayers United (MTU) is a statewide and grassroots organization that could use your assistance and/or support. The MTU's mission is to reduce our state and local tax burden and promote prudent government spending. FMI: www.mainetaxpayers.com
