Several car break-ins reported in Machias

MACHIAS, Maine — A woman who locked her car, but forget to close a rear window found many of her belongings, including a laptop, strewn across the lawn Wednesday morning of the Water Street residence she was visiting Tuesday evening.

The woman said the car break-in happened sometime between 12:30 and 6:30 a.m. Wednesday.

The night before, she explained, she had packed her car for her return trip home, locked it, but accidentally left a rear window partially open.

When she found all of her personal belongings on the ground the next morning, she called police.

Chief Grady Dwelley confirmed Wednesday that police have suspects. “It is just a matter of rounding them up and talking to them,” he said.

Four vehicles have been broken into since Monday, the chief said. The break-ins have all been within a half-mile of each other and appear to be confined to the northwest side of town, he added.

“Officer Richard Strout said it was the third complaint they had received that morning,” the woman said.

“I think one was at the nursing home, the other was on Court Street. They were just wandering around,” she said of the suspects.

“They took everything out of my wallet, but left it there. They left my debit cards, my checkbook, all they took was the cash and a camera.” She estimated that they stole around $130 in cash. She said she left her purse in the car because she was leaving in the morning — besides, she thought, the car was locked.

The woman said that Strout called her Wednesday afternoon to ask for a more thorough description of the camera that was stolen. “He said he checked with a store in Machias where people pawn things and said it was not there,” she said.

Dwelley said there did not appear to be any consistent method of entry or target. “I am not sure they are looking for anything specific when they do it,” he said. He believes the suspects were looking for money. Some of the cars were locked while others were not, he added.

If anyone has had their car broken into or if they have seen anything suspicious they are asked to call police at 255-8558.

That water street area is the bad part of town!!!!!! LOL!!!!!!! Might want to check in the river just under the bridge where the pigeons hang out.??

Must have run low on money for OXYs.

Machias, OXY Capital of Maine.

You mean Oxyclean? I didn't know they manufactured Oxyclean there. Billy Mays is from machias?

Where were the cops? Trying to catch someone going 5 MPH over the speed limit. Fewer donuts and more police foot time would make a big difference in the downtown area.

Obviously, this happened in the middle of the night. You cant' watch EVERYTHING, or be more than one place at once. If you actually noticed mcclam. The only people I ever see at the local dunkin donuts is game wardens, and occasionally a few state troopers. They're not eating donuts though. They're having a normal breakfast which ANY MAN is allowed to have, and drinking coffee. You can't judge these men, and HOW they do their job, by where they eat. Obviously Mr. Strout is doing his job researching to the best of his ability, as the paper clearly states, he's gone around asking questions. Have you ever done thier job? Probably not, until then, you shouldn't be making illigitamate comments about their lifestyle.

It was probably some kids related to the cops or the town manager or some other high profile citizen. Most oxy addicts are more resourceful than to break into cars, I think it's just some kids looking for trouble to get into, after all, boys will be boys then they grow up to be cops! LOL tabitham84: I bet you eat swine for breakfast.

tabitham84, have you seen Billy Mays lately? Maybe eating a doughnut? That Oxyclean sure does keep your teeth clean LOL!!!!!!!!!!

Dwelly and Strout what a class act !!!! Honestly they couldnt convict a paper bag!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Machias Cops were tailgating cars with their high beams on when these crimes were committed. Got to get that big bust 1 mile over the speed limit.

What a joke you people are.

Officer Strout is a great cop, and does his job unlike other Washington Counties, or cops who just sit around trying to pick up chicks.
