Palin, Maine TV anchor look-alike get national attention

Move over, Tina Fey: there’s a new Sarah Palin look-alike and she’s from Bangor.

Cindy Michaels, an anchor, reporter and producer for WVII ABC-7/Fox 22, has received both praise and flak for her striking resemblance to Palin, the Republican vice presidential candidate. Michaels has long brown hair that she sometimes wears up in a style similar to Palin’s, and she often wears dark-rimmed glasses — the look that has become associated with John McCain’s running mate (and mimicked by Fey on “Saturday Night Live”).

“I’ve actually been getting hate mail and nasty phone calls,” said Michaels, speaking Friday afternoon from the WVII newsroom in Bangor. “People have been saying I’ve been wearing my hair up and glasses so that I look like Sarah Palin, like I’m trying to sway their votes. Like I’m trying to send subliminal messages to people who may be on the fence about who they want to vote for.”

Michaels doesn’t deny the similarities, but says she has been wearing glasses and her hair up for years — long before the look became popularized by the Alaska governor.

“If you’ve seen me on the news for the past few years, you’ve seen that I wear my hair up regularly,” said Michaels. “I’ve been wearing it like that all my life. That’s what I keep telling people.”

One viewer even called in to inform Michaels that she was sure she was trying to blatantly emulate Palin — but that she was doing a bad job of it.

“A woman actually called one night and said ‘What, is this the Kmart version of Sarah Palin, with your cheap plastic glasses?’” she said. “I just thought, ‘That’s ridiculous.’ Why would I be doing it on purpose? That’s just not something I would ever do.”

When WVII received its daily phone call from Fox News headquarters looking for interesting stories from eastern Maine, Michaels and a co-worker suggested they put together a piece about the similarity. It was picked up for national broadcast by Fox News, and later by CNN. The video clip has since received numerous viewings on both the Fox News and CNN Web sites, as well as on YouTube.

Michaels said her family and friends started telling her she looked like Palin when the candidate first stepped into the spotlight about a month ago. She’s not offended by the resemblance — in fact, she’s flattered, since Palin is spoken of frequently as being a very attractive woman.

“It’s a compliment. She’s a beautiful woman, and I respect her and what she’s done. That doesn’t bother me,” she said. “What bothers me is that people somehow think I’m being a biased journalist. It’s really just a huge coincidence.”

The video clip for the WVII story about the Palin-Michaels lookalike phenomenon is available at www.wvii.com. It is not known whether Sarah Palin is aware that she looks like Cindy Michaels.

People going ga-ga over the local television girl who has a (purposeful) similar style hairdo like the Governor of Alaska...and I really cannot visualize ANY resemblances...I'am not impressed. Possibly with some makeup artist involvement can this be made nearly possible, and a set of similar style eyeglasses, then some correlation could be made. How many of you has been noticing all the "Palin lookalikes" bobbing up on TV recently? Everywhere they come in bikinis, carrying shotguns and babies, and other laugh-out-loud skits such as on SNL. Even Larry King on Larry King Live last night was getting disgusted, along with the panel, speaking of this Palin lookalike thing. Phenomena? I don't think so. As "katofbangor" would say...(NOT).

Some people just don't get it do they?

Cindy, enjoy it while you can! Sarah Palin is woefully underqualified and much too ambitious! She is either going down in a ball of flames because her shortcomings will become apparent or she will get into office and be a worse disaster than Bush ever thought of being! I think its great that you have the chance to have some fun with your appearance but enjoy it now and make the most of it because it will be shortlived! Just yesterday I heard on one of the 24 hours news stations a snippet of a speech she delivered and she referred to the ticket as the "Palin-McCain" ticket. Just a slip of the tongue or unmasked ambition or stupidity?

Cindy is much better looking than Palin. And she has something that Palin doesn't have...a conscience and a brain.

way to go Cindy. all mainers should be so lucky to look like the next VP of these united states. who knows maybe Your 15 minutes of fame may run as long as 16 yrs

Is this really news? It seems BDN will go out of its way to fill the paper with news that will offend no one yet never really reports anything of any value.

I think it is so funny that people actually have sent her hate mail and have made nasty calls. Like the old saying goes, everyone has a twin. Just because her's is in the presidential running doesnt mean anything more than that. I have been watching the local news for a long time, and yes Cindy's hairstyle and glasses have been before Sarah Palin came around. So to all you jealous viewers out there, dont you have better things to do than to judge someone for how they look?

I am no Sarah Palin fan. I think Cindy Michaels is way prettier than Sarah Palin. She'd probably make a better VP too!!!

The fact that people are that petty is disturbing. Anyone who is going to go off on a local television personality, or anyone at all, for a resemblance to Palin probably are not the kind of people we need voting and forming the future of our nation.

Look, there are so many "lookalikes" in the world, there is even a 5-minute "kicker" at the end of the ABS-CBN television network, channel 2, in Manila at the end of their Saturday evening broadcst at 8pm. It is called..."Look-Alike's". They show movie stars, news people, politicans...you know...popular people, and then the "ordinaries". send photos of themselves to the station. The best of these "lookalikes" get their photos and names on this program, and those chosen win a "lookalike" Tee-shirt with ABS-CBN printed on it, and $1,000 pesos ($20.00) from the station. However Cindy Michaels may have that "beehive" hairdo...I think (again) she has no resemblance to Sarah Palin at all. Cindy should not give up her day job, and be careful IF a "conflict of interest" clause was put into her work contract at WVII. Working with other media could force her to be removed.

Congratulations Cindy, that is quite a compliment. I'm formerly from the Bangor area and now live in Wasilla, Alaska so my interest was peaked by this story. The hometown pride here is great in Wasilla. America would do well to have Sarah as VP. She is the real deal, a frontier woman, a modern day Teddy Roosevelt in whom we have been honored to have as Governor. I entreat Mainers to help us Alaskans send Sarah to DC. For change in the right direction look north, true north, on Nov 4th.

cindy michaels is a joy

sarah palin is a ploy

I believe she was wearing that hair style long before we had heard of Gov. Palin.

Forget frivolous, this story is just plain inaccurate. Palin wears rimless glasses and Michaels sports black rims. How can we possible trust a news source that misses the important details? Get with it BDN.

That's funny BDN did a story on this as when I was going through the channels one day a few days ago, I stopped on WVII to watch a news story that Cindy Michaels was reporting on and I immediately thought of the resemblance to Sarah Palin. In her defense, I have noticed that she has worn this hairstyle for a few years now - long before the remaining 49 states even heard of Sarah Palin, so she's not trying to be like her. At least Cindy Michaels is pleasant to listen to versus that annoying, screechy Palin voice!

It's no big deal. I get mistaken for Brad Pitt every day. It's a burdon we beautiful people have to bear.

Looks aside, I would be willing to bet that Cindy Michaels knows more about what is going on in the world than Gov. Palin.

MachiasMike, as in your advice to Cindy, I suggest that you enjoy your advice too. You could substitute Obama's name for Palin's in your post and have the very same message. The difference is that Palin will be VP; her major function, per the Constitution, will be to be a tie-breaker in the Senate. Obama could be the President. He is "woefully" unqualified for that.

Wow, I suppose I shouldn't be surprised by all the negative Sarah Palin comments. I'm originally from there so I know the way of thinking common to many in central Maine. I'm also not surpised that Maine is the most heavily taxed state in the nation and Alaska is the least taxed state in the nation. Imagine that!

Wow...the moonbats are reallllly going nuts. Has anyone else noticed a shortage of tinfoil at all the local Shaw's and Hannafords? If it weren't so disturbing, their reaction would be the comedy story of the year!

I happen to live in alaska and yes she does look similar to Sarah Palin and for all Your information she is a great govenor and we will all be sad to lose her if they win.... She has integrity and is an honest person and keeps her word which is something very lacking in our current officials..... Though I have the Utmost respect for her I stll will not vote McCain as I just dont like him..... But as for Sarah Palin if she were running for President You can bet Your sweet pippy I would vote for her and pray she won.....

I wonder if Palin's spouse is finally, for the first time in his life, proud of his country?

I had the pleasure of working with Cindy when she was new at B-97 and trust me, this women does not have to try to look like or act like anyone. She is 100% class and 100% her own person. She has worked her tail off to establish her own identity, if anything..someone would want look like her. Keep up the good work Cindy Pahlin..or is it Sarah Michaels!

When I am up in Bangor, I always enjoy tunning into see my old friend doing what she does best.

Rob

I wonder who the weatherman jumping jim looks like. Todd Palin????????
